This particularly applies to first time and newer beekeepers. There are some misconceptions and worries that customers have about buying packages in regards to the fear of a package will fly away. One myth is that you have to have frames of drawn comb for a package to stay. While frames of comb would certainly be beneficial, it is not necessary. I have installed hundreds and hundreds of packages in boxes with nothing but new frames with wax foundation or wax coated plastic foundation. You have to feed your bees to provide the resources to draw comb. On rare occasions a package will fly away. My opinion is that a queen was mistakenly shaken into the package and the packaged bees accepted her as their queen and not the provided caged queen inside the package cage. To prevent this, a queen excluder can be placed on top of the bottom board, then put the hive body on top of that. Then you shake your packaged bees in your box only the workers will be able to go in and out of the hive. After a week remove the excluder. I hope this helps with your decision making. Watch some YouTube videos on installing bee packages so you can see the different ways to install packages.
